This old homestead was located south of Custer, South Dakota. | Scenic Spring ~ 20 x 11Limited Ed: $250 Artist Proof: $300 Scenic, South Dakota is surrounded by spectacular Badlands scenery, but has had a bit of a “watering hole” reputation. Jon saw it one day dressed in Spring colors, and saw something different. | Sentinels ~ 28 x 17Limited Ed: $250 Artist Proof: $300 The first time Jon visited the Meeker Ranch (northeast of Custer) was a beautiful snowy day in December. “Sentinels” depicts a couple of stately Ponderosa Pines growing out of solid rock standing guard over the homestead. This is Jon’s fifth painting from the Meeker Ranch, and 15% of his print sales will go toward historic preservation through the Black Hills Historic Preservation Trust. |

He believes the Amish and Mennonite farms look like farms really should look like. November 12, 2004 was just one of these days. Shelter ~ 20 x 14Limited Ed: $250 Artist Proof: $300 The Barn at the Meeker Ranch was the last building to be built in relatively modern times (the early 1970s.) It is still in very good shape and is indeed good shelter. 15% of the proceeds from sales of this print are donated by Jon to the Black Hills Historic Preservation Trust. | Silent Crossing ~ 36 x 18Limited Ed: $125 Artist Proof: $175 In January of 1989 Jon embarked on a winter trip that would take him from South Dakota to the East Coast without ever setting his wheels on an Interstate Highway. On this trip he stopped in Barry, Illinois and took photos that would become “Winter in the Heartland”. A farm less than a mile away was the inspiration for “Silent Crossing” | A Sign of Peace ~ 18 x 13Limited Ed: $150 Artist Proof: $200 “A Sign of Peace” was inspired by the Nemo Community Church in Nemo, South Dakota. One version of how the town of Nemo was named is that it is omen spelled backwards. Another word for omen is sign. |
Silent Passage ~ 13 x 9.5Limited Ed: $100 Artist Proof: $150 Winter falls softly on the Cache la Poudre River near Windsor, Colorado, leaving a silent passage for nature to find her seasonal rest. | Simple Pleasures ~ 14 x 10Limited Ed: $150 Artist Proof: $200 There are many rustic cabins in the Black Hills where people can get away from the complications of modern life, and for a while get back to simpler times. Jon first painted this place as a commission for the owner back in the 70s, and years later used another view of this place for “Simple Pleasures”. | Sleepy Eye ~ 13 x 9Limited Ed: $125 Artist Proof: $175 Jon and Gail prefer not to stay in commercial campgrounds. They are always on the lookout for quiet, pretty places to camp. One of their favorites is a city park on the lake on the edge of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. They first stayed there on their way home from Minneapolis, and awoke to this beautiful scene. |
Snowy Hideaway ~ 14 x 10.75Limited Ed: $125 Artist Proof: $175 Karen Gerstner contacted Jon about the ranch that she and her husband lived on at the foot of Castle Rock, near Custer, South Dakota. Jon loved this lovely little valley and painted “Snowy Hideaway” from his visit. The 1874 Custer Expedition passed through this valley. | Solstice Sun ~ 10 x 7.5Limited Ed: $75 Artist Proof: Sold Out February 2011 marks the 35th anniversary of Jon’s decision to pursue his career full time. To celebrate this occasion, Jon decided to print a piece from the past. “Solstice Sun” was painted in 1989 and appeared in Gail’s coffee table book on Jon. This piece generated more response than any other non-printed painting in the book, so Jon decided “Solstice Sun” would make a very appropriate 35th Anniversary Print. | Songs of the Sioux ~ 12 x 8.5Limited Ed: $125 Artist Proof: $175 Recently long time friend Marty DeWitt, who is superintendent of Palisades State Park near Sioux Falls, informed Jon that he had the wrong river in “Song of the Sioux”. OOPS! It is actually Split Rock Creek, which is a tributary of the Big Sioux. Jon and Gail often camp in this beautiful park when they are attending events in the area. |

A Story in Stone ~ 14.5 x 11Limited Ed: $150 Artist Proof: $200 In 2004 Jay Torgerson, a Custer State Park employee, was killed while goose hunting. His mother Carol worked in the gallery for Jon and Gail. A memorial was set up for Jay to support projects in the park, and Jon painted “A Story In Stone” to help raise money for his memorial. Jon used the Norbeck Visitor Center for “A Story in Stone” because Jay had worked on its renovation. | 47 Studebaker ~ 20 x 14Limited Ed: Sold Out Artist Proof: Sold Out In 1947 Ken and Hilda Huse, of Oneida, South Dakota needed a new farm truck. Right after WW-II, trucks like this were hard to come by, but they persevered until they found this beauty. In 1980 they commissioned Jon to paint it for them. On a frosty morning in December, Jon was hiking on the Mickelson Trail near his home. Sweet Anticipation ~ 17 x 13Limited Ed: $150 Artist Proof: Sold Out Nothing is more delightful on a hot summer day than homemade ice cream. The Keck family of Rapid City remembers taking turns cranking this ice cream maker on the back porch, anticipating how good it would taste. The work and the wait made it taste even better.
